Wild speculation surrounds the cause of the fire that broke out last night at Luton Airport's new £20m Terminal 2 Car Park. The car park, which can hold 1,900 vehicles, did not have sprinklers, which chief fire officer Andrew Hopkinson reported to have said 'may have made a positive impact on this incident' and has urged the airport to install them in existing and future car parks. At the time of the fire roughly 1,200 cars were parked.
The Bedford Fire and Rescue Service said that they were first alerted by calls at 8.47pm on Tuesday. By midnight Tuesday Bed Fire Service reported on their X account that there were 15 fire appliances and 3 specialist aerial appliances on scene. One half of the structure is fully involved in fire and the building has suffered a significant structural collapse
Although the fire is now out flights have been cancelled until 3pm today at Luton. Four firefighters and a member of airport staff were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and another firefighter was treated at the scene.
