A critical safety reminder is issued for UK drivers as the massive Takata airbag recall continues, with a specific focus on Citroën and DS models. Owners are urged to check their vehicles immediately due to a fault that could have deadly consequences.
The recall, one of the largest in automotive history, stems from defective airbag inflators made by the Japanese company Takata. These airbags can explode with excessive force during a collision, sending sharp metal shrapnel into the vehicle cabin.
While the global recall affects 34 car brands, the latest data shows a significant impact in the UK, primarily on Citroën and DS vehicles manufactured between 2009 and 2019.
If you own one of the following models, you must act now. The affected vehicles include:
Citroën C3 Phase 2 (2009-2017)
Citroën C4 (2010-2013)
Citroën DS3 (2009-2019)
Citroën DS4 (2010-2013)
Citroën DS5 (2010-2015)
Citroën C-Zéro (2010-2017)
All affected owners should have received a letter, but you can double-check instantly.
Visit the Official DVSA Recall Checker: The quickest way is to use the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) website. Simply enter your vehicle registration number.
Check the Manufacturer's Site: You can also verify your car's status directly on the Citroën UK recall website.
If your vehicle is part of this airbag recall and has not been repaired, you are strongly advised not to drive it. Contact your manufacturer immediately to arrange a free repair.
Stellantis, the parent company of Citroën, has confirmed that over 83,000 repairs (61%) are complete, with approximately 53,000 vehicles remaining. They forecast the recall will be fully complete in the coming weeks.
In a statement, a spokesperson said: "We understand the concern and disruption this causes. The safety of our customers is our highest priority... Citroën remains fully committed to acting swiftly, transparently, and responsibly."
To mitigate the inconvenience, Citroën has a confirmed compensation scheme offering £22 per day to affected customers. Payments start from the date you contact them to book your repair and end when the work is done.
To qualify, you must:
Be the registered keeper.
Make the vehicle available for collection.
Keep receipts for any travel costs incurred.
You can even claim retrospectively if your vehicle has already been repaired. To register your claim or book your repair, call the dedicated helpline.
